Thanks for checking out this GoFundMe! GrowlAtMePlease and GuavaGal find themselves in a very exciting situation in that they have the opportunity to escape the current administration in the United States, as well as achieving big dreams as they go!
As we all know, the current US administration is actively attacking immigrants, democrats, and queer folks. They’re campaigning especially hard against trans folks, and we have seen ICE kidnap, detain and even execute people for the way they look. Guava, as a visibly latina trans woman, is perceived by many as the greatest threat to American freedom and feels the weight and threat of that every time she leaves the house. Neither of the girls wish to leave their families, friends, jobs and life but it seems like ICE coming isn’t an if, but a when. Escape is necessary.
After talking with a lawyer it was determined that the path of education is the most sure and attainable way to get Guava to safety. Growl applied and has now been accepted into a competitive admissions program at Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) where she will continue her pursuit of a PhD in engineering while building a safe and peaceful new life with Guava. St John’s is a beautiful city with a great quality of life, cost of living, and queer friendliness rating, and the girls believe that could build a wonderful life there- forever if necessary or over the next few years if things change here in the states.
Growl and Guava are deeply in love and will be married by the end of October. They will apply for the Canadian visas as a family, Growl with a study visa and Guava with a general work visa. One aspect of the visa application process is to prove that the family has financial assets to support themselves while in Canada. The bar for that is high, and in order to meet the qualifications the girls are selling their house.
If you’ve ever had to fix up a house to sell, you know that it’s a very expensive process. $100 this week, $200 next week, paint, carpet cleaning, fixing up little things and big things. Add onto that the immigration consultation, the passport fees and the other related expenses and you’ve got two broke girls just barely putting food on the table right now. But they’ve come this far and they’re not giving up.
Here’s where they're asking for help. There is a deadline in November for confirming the acceptance to the university. It’s a $1060 USD deposit that goes directly toward Growl’s tuition, but must be paid now in order to move forward. The semester begins on January 6th and the girls will move sometime in December. The fee for the study visa application is a little over $500 USD, and there are smaller $90 and $100 dollar range fees associated with the process. There will also be a $500 USD consultation to get a pet passport for Murphy, their beloved dog who is about to experience a real winter for the first time in his short-haired life. New expenses pop up every day it seems, and until the house sells, Guava and Growl just need a little help.
