Support Greg's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Austin Beavers and I’m humbly starting this Go-Fund-Me page in an effort to help my Mom and Step-Dad, Greg and Brandy Allison.
Next month Greg has to have neck surgery to correct his spinal stenosis, so he will not be able to work during this time and throughout his recovery. Unfortunately, Greg has already had to stop working because of this injury, and since he couldn’t afford disability insurance, this is already creating a financial burden on him and my mom. Please can you help lift some of this financial burden with a kind donation? Any amount will help.
Greg has been my stepdad since I was 2 years old, and he is one of the hardest-working men I’ve ever known. When I was a kid, he had always gone to work before I left for school, and he often wouldn’t come home until after 6 pm. Even though I’ve grown up and moved out, he still works just as hard to make ends meet, and he continues to spend his life providing for his family, leaving little to nothing for himself.
We have never been a financially wealthy family, but Greg has always managed to make ends meet - making sure we had a roof over our heads and food on the table, while Mom stayed home to take care of us kids. Now, times are tougher than ever and Greg has officially worked himself to the bone…
This all started in late May 2023, when Greg woke up with some worse-than-usual hip pain. As he went about his morning routine, he found himself falling multiple times and uncontrollably. After a few days of falling and being sent home from work, he and my mom went to the Emergency Room.
After being sent to multiple specialists, doctors learned Greg’s main nerve roots are impinged (compressed), and he has multiple bulging discs and a bone spur between his L4 and L5. In other words, Greg has severe “Spinal Stenosis”, which has affected his entire lower back and it requires him to undergo spinal fusion surgery. As a result, Greg was relieved of his duties at work, without pay, until he can recover from surgery... This will put an enormous financial strain on Brandy to provide for their household.
While doing a sensory test on Greg’s arms and hands, one doctor noticed that something was not right, and ordered a rapid/urgent CT scan on Greg’s neck. The scan showed the vertebrae in Greg’s neck are severely compressed, and that his spinal fluid has become cloudy whereas it should be clear. This is problematic because this fluid is how the legs get information from the brain, telling them when it is time to move. This ultimately means he will need neck surgery before they can operate on his lower back.
However, if the neck surgery is as successful as the doctors are hoping, it could fix his lower back problems and there will be no need for a second surgery. Obviously, we are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
The doctors have sent Greg home, waiting for the insurance company to clear the first surgery, wearing a neck brace. The doctor said Greg is very lucky not to have hurt himself even further while falling. One wrong fall on his neck, and he could have been paralyzed from the waist down.
The doctors have explained this neck operation is one of the worst and most painful surgeries anyone could possibly have, as it is extremely invasive. Recovery time, we have been told, can take as long as or more than 6 months.
Thankfully, my mom has health insurance through her new job, and that is helping with some of the medical bills at the moment. However, Greg will need a full-time caretaker after all of this surgery on the horizon, and since we can’t afford a full-time caretaker, my Mom will have to leave her work so she can care for him.
