Tl;dr first: We're facing the possibility of eviction through a series of events that were beyond our control. Our landlord is being surprisingly helpful and very patient, but we've tapped out all our resources and need to buy a bit more time.

Now the Very Long; Do Read:

I have a steady and long-term job that pays fairly well, but we're a two-income home, and my husband has had his income stunted for nearly three years. He is trying, but because of circumstances that he could not anticipate, it's become difficult to keep up the second half of the income necessary to keep us going. His boss and friend (truly: his boss was also a very close friend and not in a weird 'we are all family' sort of way; all of his employees have remained friend and helped one another) died unexpectedly, which put Greg out of a job. Greg began the process of getting his job back, which requires a lot of paperwork and keeping a car and its insurance paid for. (He's a driving instructor in NYC.)

The car broke, so we've been paying for both the repairs and the insurance. We've been paying for the fees necessary to get his driving school up and running. Greg also has issues that limit his mobility, and while he's tried to do other jobs, his joints can't support most of those jobs for very long. He's tried being a waiter, and being a mover, and being a cashier in the short-term, but the pain hits him and it doesn't work out.

He was working for nearly a year at a different driving school, and that was helping us quite a lot. Not completely, of course, but it let the landlord know we were making an effort to pay off back rent. And you, btw, all helped get us to the point where we'd paid up to where we needed to be. You all helped pay on the car insurance, and convince the mechanic to do a proper fix on the car, and convince the judge in our eviction case that we were working in good faith to honor our lease.

But a few weeks back the driving school got its license revoked for reasons known only to the DMV because the notice was lost in the mail. The school had done everything to comply with the requirements, but was unaware of the notification (I know, sounds like I'm making that up and being shady, but I assure you this is a weird and real thing that happened). So Greg is out of a job again, but also temporarily! They're working on resolution of the license issue, and also the license for his OWN school is still in play.

His car is finally fixed. And we've been very luck in two ways: the mechanic is happy to help Greg with a payment plan because Greg is known in our community as a good and reliable person, and he's taught so many here how to drive, and helped them out when they needed help beyond driving. And also, because we're very good tenants, our landlord keeps giving us grace because they want to keep us here.

The thing is, all of that depends on Greg having either a job or some money coming in. Which he will in a few weeks, but we have to see the judge over our eviction notice next week. We need to show the judge we are still trying to keep up income.

Look. All this is dumb. All of this is stressful for us, and I know everyone is stressing over a lot of other things. But if you can once again (I hate this) give what you can, it will help. This has been a years-long ordeal, and it is close to being resolved. But we need one more push forward, I'm afraid, to get to that resolution.
