Support Greg's Fight Against Heart Failure

In 2018, my husband Greg was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, after a virus attacked his heart. He was forced into retirement, from a job he had worked for 27 years. With both of us being beach lovers, we decided to make the move to Emerald Isle, to try to enjoy his retirement. However, our lives have been a roller coaster of medical ups and downs. In 2020, Greg had a procedure for a defibrillator. He went months without any issues and thought once again our lives could get back to some normalcy. This year has been the hardest so far. In March, Greg was working in his shop, passed out and his defibrillator shocked him back to consciousness. He was hospitalized for a week. Since then, his defibrillator has went off four times. He has had two heart procedures in the last month and another weeks stay in the hospital. The doctors have told us his heart is failing. Without any medical treatment he has a life expectancy of six months to a year to live. We have decided to pursue aggressive treatment options. He is currently on a 24 hour central IV drip, and has a home health nurse to come two days a week. He is currently being evaluated to get a LVAD (heart pump) and be placed on a heart transplant registry.

Since March, I have had to miss many days of work to take care of him, staying at the hospital with him and take him to his many appointments. I have exhausted all of my PTO. I am currently taking FMLA on an intermittent basis, so I can at least work as much as possible. In the weeks ahead I will need to transition to full time FMLA to take care of him.

Greg and I have always tried to live our lives with genuine compassion and kindness for others. We have never met strangers and have friends from all walks of life. We are asking for a little of that compassion in return. We currently need help with every day living expenses, travel expenses, medical expenses and monthly bills. We never thought we would ever be in a position to ask for help. If you have in your heart to help us, we would greatly appreciate anything you can offer.
