Help Greg Fight Esophageal Cancer and Get Back on His Feet

Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
My name is Greg Cummings, and I am a graduate of the Class of 1968 at Brookline High School in Brookline, MA where, I might add, was also the school mascot. My wife Cheryl and I are reaching out in one of the most difficult times of our lives. Originally from Massachusetts and later California, we now live in Ohio—just the two of us, with no nearby family or close friends. Despite the isolation, we’ve always kept each other going, and now more than ever, we need help from the kindness of others.
I’ve recently been diagnosed with a non-cancerous colon obstruction and, much more seriously, esophageal cancer. The diagnosis has been overwhelming, and while I’ve managed to stay positive, truth be told, I couldn’t do this without Cheryl’s strength beside me.
We’ve already begun this cancer journey together, and while it won’t be easy, we’re grateful to have an incredible surgical oncologist who is optimistic about my treatment and recovery. She has put together a trusted team of doctors who will be working with her. I’ve completed several tests and facing more as we move forward with treatment. For now we do know that there are two possible scenarios...chemo and/or radiation, prior to surgery, depending on the stage…or just surgery if it’s a low stage. The doctor did say this appears to be an early one so we’re hopeful it’s just the surgery. But, we have been referred for consultations with the medical and radiation oncologists just to have in place if needed. The surgery itself, either way, will be intensive with several organs being impacted in order to remove the malignancy. The recovery period will be long and uncomfortable. We are Team Cummings and will get through this.
Even with Medicare, the cost of everything—from procedures and medication to travel and recovery—is more than we can manage on our limited income. We live a simple, quiet life on our Social Security, and our small savings won’t come close to covering what’s to come.
That’s why we’ve started this fundraiser. Our goal is to raise $75,000 to help cover the medical expenses and ensure Cheryl and I can stay afloat during this long road ahead. If we’re fortunate enough not to use all the funds, I promise personally to use the remainder to help someone else facing a similar battle.
I’m a person who always puts others first. I love nearly all sports throughout the U.S. Cheryl and I are lifelong animal lovers—not limited to dogs and cats alike. We’ve always done our best to care for others. Now, we’re humbly asking for your help.
Whether you’re able to donate or simply share this campaign to others, we are deeply grateful for your support. Every bit of kindness means the world to us.
With heartfelt thanks,
Greg & Cheryl Cummings
