Hello friends, family and community. On Monday August 10th, our very own Greg Card went in for an MRI after experiencing some subtle neurological symptoms. His doctor discovered a large mass in his right frontal lobe and sent the results to the Neurology team at Riverbend in Springfield. His MRI caught the attention of the Neurologists and they suggested he head straight to the ER for further testing.

What started as a precautionary ER visit turned into an excruciating week of tests and scans, ultimately leading to his diagnosis of Grade 4 Primary Glioblastoma and an emergency brain surgery on Friday August 14th. This devastating diagnosis has completely upended our lives, as Greg is now recovering from the surgery and set to start Chemo and Radiation in a couple weeks. Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive, fast growing forms of brain cancer and unfortunately classified as incurable. Our goal for the coming months is to support Greg’s comfort, create a positive and joyful atmosphere and surround him with family and love as we navigate this impossibly difficult time. As we care closely for Greg, our ability to continue working and supporting the household has been greatly limited, so we are asking our community graciously for support. Any funds raised will help us provide him with the best medical care, safe transport to and from appointments and nutritious food to continue healing him in any way that we can.

For over 2 decades, Laurie and Greg ran and operated the beloved Cafe Mundo in Newport. With hearts full of love and generosity, they provided support for the community and offered a space of safety and acceptance for all. Mundo quickly became the meeting place, the living room, the stage, the safe haven and the heartbeat of Nye Beach. If you have at one point or another received the benefits of the Mundo Magic, your support during this difficult time would mean the world to us.

In addition, we are working on compiling a memoriam of said Mundo Magic. If you or anyone you know has photos, videos or memories from Mundo over the years, please submit any content or stories to email address cafemundoarchives at gmail. This news has been such a shock and as we want to hear from each and every one of you, we also appreciate having the space and privacy to process this as a family. We want to provide Greg and Laurie with a visual representation of their legacy and the ways they have touched so many lives in the community. We hope that this will be the perfect opportunity for you all to reach out and express your support for Greg and the Mundo gang.
