Hi everyone, my name is Stacy O'Donnell, and I am Greer Hermann’s aunt. On March 6th, our family's world was turned upside down when Greer was involved in a catastrophic snowmobiling accident in Maine.

Details below:

If you know Greer, you know his heart, his amazing work ethic, his loyalty to friends and family, and his deep-rooted love for the outdoors. Whether snowmobiling or riding ATVs through the trails of Northern Maine or fishing the waters of Cape Cod, Greer has always been most at home in the wild.

On March 6th, that life was nearly lost.

While snowmobiling in Millinocket, Maine with his girlfriend and a couple of friends, Greer hit a patch of ice that sent his sled into a turbulent roll, subsequently hitting a tree and violently ejecting him. Nothing short of a miracle, a Baxter State Park Ranger was riding by and immediately was able to call for assistance and render medical aid to him. It took two grueling hours to extract him from the woods before he was Life-Flighted from Abol Bridge to Bangor. Once the reality of his condition became clear: Greer’s injuries were catastrophic—they were beyond the trauma surgeon team's ability to treat as they were concerned with him losing his leg or his function in his lower level and said it would be life-altering.

Critical Transfer & 10-Hour Surgery: With heavy fog grounding flights, an emergency Life Flight ground transport equipped with full ICU capabilities was dispatched to rush Greer from Bangor, Maine to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Every minute was a battle for survival.

Greer’s injuries:
  • A “mangled” pelvis
  • Broken, severely separated sacrum
  • Drastically damaged, shattered hip
  • Total leg dislocation of the other femur
  • Internal bleeding requiring 5 life-saving blood transfusions
  • Respiratory failure, where he stopped breathing and had to be revived

Lifesaving Surgery: Once he reached Boston, Greer was rushed into the MGH Trauma floor and immediately had holes drilled into his bones for traction to alleviate the pressure off his pelvis and hip to give additional time to organize the perfect team of surgeons for this complex injury. The next morning on March 9th, he had a marathon 10-hour emergency surgery. A specialized team of surgeons fought to piece him back together, installing the permanent rods, plates, and screws that now hold his pelvis, sacrum, and hips together.

Agonizing Road to Recovery: For a 22-year-old plumber/construction worker who relies on physical work for a living, the current prognosis is utterly overwhelming. His physical pain is excruciating, and his medical debt will be life-altering. Greer’s road ahead will be measured in months and years, not days.

Trauma ICU to Rehabilitation: Greer has been transported to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He now faces:
  • Weeks of complete non-weight-bearing in a bed/wheelchair
  • Intensive, agonizing physical therapy and occupational therapy to relearn how to walk
  • Injections to avoid blood clotting for additional months of extensive recovery
  • Monitoring of fused bones, joints, and new hardware
  • Preventing infection

Astronomical Medical Bills: Greer is a 2022 graduate of Cape Cod Tech and an incredibly proud member of the blue-collar community. His mother, Amy Maloney (Cape Cod realtor), and stepfather, Joe Mashrick (retired Brewster police officer), haven't left his side, but the financial weight of this ordeal is staggering. Between the multiple Life-Flights, the 10-hour trauma surgery, and months of inpatient and outpatient rehab, travel to and from, his lost wages, the medical bills and his care will be overwhelming.

How You Can Help:
Donate: Every dollar goes directly to Greer’s medical bills, personal needs, specialized equipment, and long-term rehabilitation and financial responsibilities.
Pray: Keep Greer, Amy, and Joe in your thoughts as they navigate this unimaginable ordeal and the road ahead.
Share: Tell others of Greer's battle so that we can all come together to help his recovery.

Thank you for standing with Greer during the fight of his life. He has spent his life working hard for his future—let’s help him recover; he's not out of the woods yet.
