Since Grassroots Books opened 2009, we have worked hard to be the bookstore this community deserves: A lively bookstore with great prices, a passionate staff, a well-curated selection, and a meaningful place within the community. Over the years, we have proudly promoted literacy, given away countless free books, created jobs, paid taxes, supported local schools and nonprofits, and earned our place in this community.
But now we are faced with closure through at least mid-April, and we are running out of cash to pay our rent, utilities, payroll, liabilities, and publishers. We want to make sure we have enough cash on-hand to re-open once we make it through.
We are asking for your immediate support. We have great credit and have borrowed quite a bit in the last few days. But we’re uncertain whether borrowing and paying interest is responsible as we don’t know when we will be able to again generate meaningful income. We have asked the governor’s office for permission to resume contactless curbside pickup, but it will not be enough. So, like so many small business owners who are facing similar situations, we are using this fundraising campaign as an additional effort to support the store.
Funds given to this campaign will help us weather this storm and make sure we can ultimately reach our goal, which is to keep this business afloat and promote literacy in Reno for years to come. Even once this passes, we are unsure what the market will look like when we re-open. This campaign will help support Grassroots Books now and over the next several months, and possibly longer.
If you can give any amount, we are truly grateful. If not, there are other ways to support us and other small bookstores facing perilous times and uncertain futures, such as signing up for newsletters and social media accounts, buying gift cards, telling your friends, and lending a kind word.
Thank you for these past ten years. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives. Thank you for allowing us to promote literacy, and become a store where our community could come together and celebrate books. With your support, we can keep Reno reading.
