On Sunday, December 28th, Grady Davis was involved in a body surfing accident while on vacation in Kauai that resulted in a serious spinal cord injury resulting in significant limited movement, especially in his arms and hands. He required emergency surgery, which was successful, and he is currently receiving care at a high quality medical center in Honolulu. In the days following surgery, everything was progressing as well as could be hoped. Grady was alert and had begun both physical therapy and occupational therapy. Anyone who knows Grady knows he is a strong, determined man with an incredible will, and they were all hopeful as he began the long road toward recovery.
Unfortunately, yesterday Grady suffered a stroke in the right occipital lobe while in the ICU, which has significantly impaired his vision. This unexpected complication has added another major challenge to an already difficult recovery and has been devastating for both Grady and his family. The entire family remains in Hawaii, traveling back and forth between Kauai, where they are staying, and Honolulu, where Grady is hospitalized. Once Grady is medically stable to go to a spinal rehabilitation facility, the family would like to bring him back to California so he can continue rehabilitation closer to home. The hope is to transfer him to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, allowing his family to resume their lives, and be close to their father, husband, and grandad while he heals.
Grady is not well enough to travel on a commercial flight for quite a while. As soon as he is able to go to rehab, the Davis family will need to arrange a medical transport flight that includes both a nurse and a care physician. As you can imagine, this type of transport is extraordinarily expensive. His insurance will not cover this flight. The emotional toll of this crisis, combined with the logistics and financial impact are overwhelming. The Davis family did not want to ask for help. They are deeply grateful people who feel blessed in many ways. However, this added expense, on top of everything they are facing, is simply more than they can manage alone.
We are reaching out to our community now to ask for support for our dear Grady. He has supported and helped so many over the years, and there is truly no one with a bigger heart or a stronger presence. Any contribution, whether financial or by sharing this message, will help lift some of the weight from this family and allow them to focus on what matters most, Grady’s recovery. Thank you for your love, prayers, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
