Help Us Honor Our ML Graduates with Graduation Cords
My name is Rose Castillo, and I’m a proud ESOL teacher at Meadowcreek High School, a school filled with brilliant, resilient, and diverse multilingual learners. Alongside my incredible colleagues, Dr. Thornton and Ms. White, we wanted to start a new tradition that truly honors the incredible journey our Multilingual Learner (ML) students have taken to reach graduation.
Many of our students have overcome incredible odds: learning a new language, navigating a new culture, and balancing academic challenges, all while supporting their families and communities. Despite everything, they’ve shown up, worked hard, and are about to walk across the stage with pride.
We proposed purchasing special graduation cords for our ML seniors, a small but meaningful symbol of their perseverance and achievement. Unfortunately, due to a lack of school funding, our request was denied.
We had planned to hand out the cords during our senior celebration event on May 7, but we were only informed this week that our request couldn’t be fulfilled. Now, we’re in a bit of a time crunch.
That’s where you come in.
If you’ve ever been moved by the story of an immigrant, inspired by a student learning English, or believe in honoring hard work in all its forms, please consider donating. No amount is too small. If you can’t donate, sharing this campaign is just as powerful.
Let’s show these students that their efforts don’t go unnoticed, that their stories, their languages, and their success matter.
With gratitude,
Ms. Castillo, Dr. Thornton, and Ms. White
