Message from Canadian travellers Jill, Sue, Lesley & Penelope
We respectfully ask if you would consider making a donation to support the families of Gorilla Bookings Uganda. CAD$85 feeds one family of 10 for 3 days - roughly equivalent to these comfort foods/activities that we enjoy : 6 months of Netflix or 6 bottles of wine.
Who Receives the Funds?
Donations will be pooled and shared with the Gorilla Bookings team and their families to buy food - including Allan (8 family members), Alex (9), Ben (7), Benon (8), Bob (10), Charles (10), Eli (6), Jimmy (10), Julius (9), Justus (10), Luka (8), Moses (8), Nahabwe (9), Richards (12), and other GB team members.
No portion of your funds will go to the GB Uganda business. Jill (Catherine) Ash is listed as beneficiary because the funds cannot be transferred directly to Uganda (see more below).
You may have already been contacted by Justus or your guide, as we have been, asking for assistance. We wish to donate and wondered if others do too. We set up this platform to make it easier for people to donate and for the guides collectively to ask for and receive help. The GB Family have been notified of this fundraiser via their WhatsApp group, and have been sharing funds received prior to this fundraiser (see below for a WhatsApp excerpt forwarded from our guide Charles).
Donations of any size would be gratefully welcomed. Please consider topping up your donation by 2.9% to cover third-party payment processing fees. If you are in Canada, please contact us for eTransfer details so that your entire amount can be given. Your donation cannot be specifically allocated so if you wish your entire donation to go to one individual, you will need to make those arrangements with that individual directly.
How Your Donation is Managed
gofundme reduces your donation by 2.9% plus $0.30 for payment processing fees so please consider topping up to cover this cost. On top of your donation amount, you will be charged a gofundme tip of min. CAD$1, and foreign exchange will be applied if you are donating from outside Canada.
Jill (Catherine) Ash is listed as beneficiary because the funds cannot be transferred directly to Uganda from gofundme (see Requirements to Withdraw ). The funds have to be deposited to a Canadian account that Jill opened for this purpose. As current and retired Canadian bank (CIBC) employees, we can exchange the funds at a discounted foreign exchange rate. We do still pay a fee when wiring the funds to Stanbic Bank. The funds will be wired to our guide Charles (senior guide) and distributed by him to the others.
Why Donate?
Jill, Sue, Lesley and Penelope enjoyed a magical vacation filled with gorillas, wildlife and beautiful landscapes. But more than that, our journey was enriched and our hearts opened as our guides shared stories of Ugandan traditions, the importance of family and their culture of giving back.
They helped us give back: Charles and Justus helped us shop for and then delivered school supplies, guided Jill & Sue in sponsoring two children to receive secondary school education. Many times during our trip, Charles ran errands for past travellers sponsoring various projects e.g. building a school. We learned that Charles was a teacher, sponsors education for other children in his village and regularly gives back to his community.
Why Now?
There are no tourists. There are no generous emergency medical, financial and social assistance programs or stimulus packages, such as those we benefit from in our countries. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has warned of a hunger pandemic particularly in countries identified as already facing "crisis-level food insecurity" - this includes Uganda.
Raising CAD$7,000 (USD$5,000) will provide 2.5 weeks worth of posho (cornmeal), banana, rice and beans for 15 Team Gorilla Bookings Uganda families. #GivingTuesdayUG
Note from Charles to the WhatsApp group "GB Family": "I wish to pass on yet another good news regarding seeking help/support from our past clients. We have got an opportunity from one of our friends (past client) from Canada, who is willing to create a fundraising campaign through a web portal called: “gofundme” this is where all our tour guides have been listed so that the people can clear see who will benefit at time when funds arrive in Uganda , as we go through this pandemic situation. This is to add voice on the previous NOTE I had communicated last week, This new approach “gofundme” is a group approach where all guides are beneficiaries and we will share the funds accordingly once it arrives, just like we did before."
