Support Goose's Road to Recovery

This weekend has been one I wish no one ever has to go through. On Thursday, 6/20/24, we brought our new 13-week-old kitten Goose to the vet for a lack of appetite and listlessness. What we hoped would be solved with a dose of medicine turned instead into an ultrasound and an immediate trip to Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care.

Goose was diagnosed with an intussusception, a serious medical condition in which one part of the intestine telescopes into another part. The condition is life-threatening and the vets at Specialty Care prepped Goose immediately for surgery to save his life.

After a day of worry for us humans, we were finally able to bring Goose home Friday night, 6/21. The veterinarian surgeon told us that the surgery had been more complicated than first realized, due to the fact that a portion of the intestine had become twisted and died off due to lack of blood flow, so that part had to be removed. But Goose came through okay and was ready for rest and healing at home.

For two weeks, Goose will have to stay secluded away from his litter mate and brother, Bailey, to keep the poor boy from getting too rambunctious and aggravating his surgery wound. We set up a crate in one of the spare rooms of the house and all the members of our family have taken turns all weekend long sitting with the poor tyke and helping him eat and use the litter box.

Goose is in good spirits and, although it took him a while to figure out how to eat and drink water with a cone on his head, he's determined to pull through. In fact he's not at all happy to be resting in a crate and wants to know when he can leave his isolation and rejoin his brother and the rest of his family.

I'm so thankful that our new family members has pulled through, but now my family is facing a daunting medical bill unlike anything I've personally had to deal with before. I'm turning to friends and family, and the kindness of the online community, to help us and Goose in this time of need.

If you've read this whole thing, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Anything you can do would be so appreciated by Goose, Bailey, and my family.
