My mother, Glenda, has always been a source of strength and kindness for our family and her community. On April 21st, while taking my step-father to his radiation treatment for lung cancer, Glenda was involved in a head-on collision. The other driver crossed the center line in a tight corner, going too fast on wet roads, and hit her car. She was rushed by ambulance to the emergency department, where she was diagnosed with multiple fractures of her right ankle and a rib fracture. Her ankle will require surgery, but the hospital tried to quickly discharge her. With the help of our family, we made sure she received skilled rehab, even though Kaiser never helped her get pain under control nor seemed interested in doing so. Surgery won't be for two weeks, and she is unable to bear weight in her lower right extremity. Even after surgery, she won't be able to bear weight on that ankle for some time. Her house is not wheelchair accessible, and Glenda's tendency to do more than she should is always a concern. Now, we are finding out that the other driver probably doesn't have insurance, and the skilled rehab facility is telling her every day that insurance is going to cut her off. This entire situation is terrible, and she's facing challenges she has never experienced before. It's been incredibly hard for her and our family.
