Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness and often develops without early warning signs, making education and early detection essential. January is recognized nationwide as National Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing public understanding of this disease and encouraging routine eye examinations that can help preserve vision.

Recent data indicate that an estimated 4.2 million U.S. adults have glaucoma, with approximately 1.5 million experiencing vision-affecting glaucoma that can impair daily activities and quality of life. Among adults aged 40 and older—the age group at highest risk—about 2.56 % have glaucoma.

This 5K event brings together South Lake County and neighboring Central Florida communities—including Orlando, Winter Haven, Apopka, and surrounding areas—to raise awareness of glaucoma and support meaningful action. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit four important initiatives that reflect both local commitment and broader impact:

Supporting Future Physicians in Our Community
Funds will provide a scholarship to a graduating senior from a local high school who is interested in pursuing a career in medicine. By investing in students from our own community, we help shape the future of healthcare and medical leadership.

Advancing Glaucoma Research Nationwide
A portion of the proceeds will support The Glaucoma Foundation, which funds collaborative, evidence-based research aimed at improving the early detection, treatment, and long-term management of glaucoma.

Strengthening Global Ophthalmology Training
Event funds will assist with the procurement of essential diagnostic equipment for ophthalmology residents in Haiti-based training programs. These resources improve glaucoma examination skills and help expand access to quality eye care in underserved regions.

Expanding Access to Surgical Care Locally
A dedicated surgical fund will support local glaucoma patients who are uninsured or underinsured. These funds will help offset the cost of medically necessary glaucoma surgeries, reducing financial barriers and helping preserve vision for members of our own community.

By participating in this 5K, residents of South Lake County and surrounding cities join a national effort to raise glaucoma awareness while making a direct impact locally and beyond. Your participation—whether by running, walking, donating, or sharing—helps turn awareness into action and supports sight-saving care, education, and research.
