On Valentine's day 2025 we received the bad news that our beloved Gizmo was diagnosed with a highly aggressive cancer, Osteosarcoma. We received the diagnosis a mere week before his 3 year adoption date. He was scheduled to have his cancerous leg amputated the following Monday.
He has meant everything to my wife (Sarah) and I. We want to share our lives with him and his brother Charlie for many more years, not just months. Unfortunately, Osteosarcoma, even with amputation and chemotherapy far too often proves terminal within a year or less. Very few cases make it past two years after diagnosis.
Enter Yale's new study using a vaccine to treat Osteosarcoma in dogs. Although it is in the trial stage, it has had promising results slowing, or in some, halting the spread of the cancer altogether. We have reached out to Yale, and Gizmo appears to be a promising candidate. While the vaccine itself is free, the trips to receive them as well as the initial and repeat testing required are not.
We are looking for help to cover expenses providing the two separate trips to Cincinnati to get the vaccine, urinalysis, bloodwork, chest x-rays, etc. We then must receive check-ups (albeit locally) at the 3, 6, and 9 month stage for additional tests and send the results to Yale. Chemotherapy may also be recommended and/or required.
This is where we ask of you, the donor to step in. Any amount would be a tremendous help to get Gizzy the treatment that may save his life.
