Hi! I am a current undergraduate student with a deep passion and commitment to wildlife conservation. I am currently raising funds to support an incredible research opportunity in South Africa, where I will be conducting research on the feeding behaviors and habits of giraffes.
Why does this research matter?
Giraffes play a vital role in shaping the African ecosystems, yet there is still so much we don't know about their feeding habits, food preferences, and how changes in habitat and climate affect them.
Understanding giraffe feeding behavior can help us:
- Protect the habitats they depend on
- Support conservation efforts
- Improve coexistence with local communities and land use
- Preserve biodiversity
South Africa is home to many populations of giraffes that live in diverse environments, from protected reserves to semi-managed lands. Studying them in these varying environments can help gain a broader understanding of how they adapt to different ecological pressures.
What am I doing?
I'll be spending approximately 3 months in the field collecting data on:
- What giraffes eat - specifically what vegetation they seem to prefer most
- How often they eat and at what times
- How seasonal changes may affect their eating patterns
- The role of height and tree species in their diet
- How human activity may impact their behavior
Every day includes hours of observation, note-taking, data collection, analysis, and high familiarity with each individual giraffe on the reserve.
Why do I need help?
Research like this requires funding, especially when international travel is involved. While I have been prioritizing personal savings to go towards these costs, I still need help covering things like air travel, transportation in remote areas (to and from the reserve), and basic living expenses.
My goal is to raise $3,000, which will directly support the continuation and quality of this research. Every dollar helps me get closer to understanding how we can better protect giraffes and their habitat.
Whether you donate, share this campaign, or simply spread the word, you are supporting science, conservation, and the future of giraffes in Africa.
This project isn't just about data. It's about ensuring that future generations can see giraffes in the wild, thriving in their natural homes.
Thank you.
