To say my nephew, Giovanni Cruz, is a trooper would be just barely scratching the surface at describing this babies strength and perseverance. God has a plan for our family, and we will all stick together to support Britt and Gio however we can!!

For those of you who don’t know this sweet boy in real life, here is a little back story as to what has been going on- Throughout the week Gio had been lethargic, not wanting to eat, just acting off, to which Britt treated as maybe him coming down with a virus. Thursday is when she realized that something just wasn’t right. Her intuition told her to check his blood sugar. She did twice with a reading over 600. She figured the reader was old and maybe faulty so they went to the Urgent Care immediately, where his blood sugar was off the charts and couldn’t be processed. From there they went directly to Children’s Hospital downtown, where he will be for the next couple days at least. We found out Gio has Type 1 diabetes and was critically high at 730, and is still now trying to bring his levels to a safe number today, 24 hours later.

Brittaney has been a mess, just trying to love and comfort her baby and also learn how to adapt to their new lifestyle of round the clock pokes, doses and numbers. It’s my belief that God knew exactly what he was doing when he picked Britt to be Gios mama. With her history as a phlebotomist and her fierce deep love for her son, he is exactly where he needs to be and will be so very well cared for. This is going to be a learning experience for us all, but we’re here and ready to fight the fight for this baby boy, whom we all love so much!!!!!

Since he is only two years old, it goes without saying that Britts new full time 24/7 job is being Gios caretaker, advocate, support system. At least for a while, as she learns how to adjust to this new lifestyle. She is a single mom who is just distraught and trying to imagine a future much different than she had planned.

Can we please come together as a family, as a community, and help this single, amazing mama get a little ahead, so she doesn’t fall behind doing what she needs to do for her son. They both need our support in this trying time.
