Hi there! My name is Jayna I am writing this today about a woman who is the definition of strength, resilience, and selflessness. Her name is Gerri Garber, or some know her as “Mimi or Gigi”. She is a beacon of hope and kindness and is always the first to lend a hand and never hesitates to give to others.

Gerri was working three jobs while also staying busy helping with her grandchildren prior to becoming sick. She is the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. Unfortunately, Gerri lost her employment in April.

This year alone, she was hospitalized for around 4-5 months in total. She has suffered from blood clots in her legs and lungs, pancreatic necrosis, a bleeding ulcer, a collapsed lung, ascites with multiple paracentesis and thoracentesis procedures, sepsis, vocal cord damage from surgery, and more. One third of her pancreas was removed along with her gallbladder and spleen. Multiple wound vacs have been required to help her incisions to heal properly. Her stomach was also punctured during one of her surgeries and will not heal despite numerous attempts to close it. This is causing fluid to leak from her stomach. She has had multiple surgeries to repair this however the puncture site will not heal. She will have her 12th surgery in two weeks to place a new drain in hopes this will help to alleviate pressure at the puncture site. Due to the leaking from her stomach, she has not been allowed to eat since January and has been receiving TPN(Total parenteral nutrition) since she cannot eat orally. About two weeks ago, her physicians determined it would be best to have a more permanent feeding route of administration and to provide better nutrition for her so a PEG tube was placed (a feeding tube in her stomach).

The financial burden of Gerri's medical expenses is overwhelming. Just one week of hospital visits alone totaled over $88,000 which insurance will not cover completely. The cost of doctor appointments, medical supplies, and other healthcare necessities continue to pile up. This financial stress is debilitating not only physically but mentally as well.

Gerri is fighting every day not only for her health but also against the mounting financial stress that threatens to crush her spirit. It's heartbreaking to see such a strong, selfless, hardworking woman struggling.
