Please help fund George’s remaining two years of nursing college in Malawi. We need to cover tuition, food and accommodation, clothing, and support for his family while he is in school. The total budget for two years is $5,200.
Here is the background. George first joined us as a security guard at our home in Malawi (also the location of the Global Health Informatics Institute - GHII) in 2023. He immediately distinguished himself as an engaging individual, always there with a smile and a willingness to help. Frequently wearing a tee-shirt with a five-point star in the center of a circle, we naturally gave him the nickname Captain America, or just Captain for short.
At GHII we have been running a Saturday morning drop-in electronics club since 2018 (minus a short gap during COVID). George had seen people arriving and asked what it was about. When we explained, he expressed interest, and asked if he could attend. We applauded his enthusiasm, but were sceptical that he would manage to follow the material, assuming that he had probably not finished high school. Nonetheless, we let him attend, which he did religiously.
Several weeks passed, and to our surprise, he was not only coping, he was answering questions ahead of people who had been attending much longer. Moreover, he had meticulously compiled a small hardcover notebook of material covered during all the sessions since he had joined. Baffled by this, we took George aside and asked about his educational background. George explained that he had graduated high school (secondary school as it is referred to in Malawi) with sufficiently competitive grades to attend a public university. He said that since graduation it had been his ambition to train as a nurse. However, due to shortage of funds he had not managed, and had just supported himself and his wife and son with whatever work he could find.
Working with a few Malawian colleagues we helped George apply for nursing school, and in the fall of 2024 he was accepted to the Nkhoma College of Nursing and Midwifery, which is located just south of Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe. We funded his first two semesters and we are pleased to report that Captain has achieved the highest grades in his class according to his lecturer (see report card pictured below). He is now completing his second internship, posted to Mchinji DIstrict Hospital, and will return to school in November.
Please help us support George and his family to realize his dream of becoming a nurse
