Help George in His Fight Against Rare Cancer
In July of this year, my brother-in-law George began experiencing severe pain in his abdomen. Despite multiple doctor visits, doctors were unable to determine the cause. In August, as his pain worsened, my sister, Elizabeth, took him to the ER, where they discovered a 24 cm mass in his abdomen and swollen lymph nodes throughout his abdomen. After performing a biopsy on the mass, as well as draining fluid from his lung for testing, the results came back malignant—the cancer had already metastasized.
At first, George was misdiagnosed with Small Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma stage 4 and began receiving treatment accordingly. However, after two months of consultations with oncologists at MD Anderson in Houston, we learned the correct diagnosis: Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT), a rare and aggressive stage 4 cancer, which requires a different treatment plan.
What is DSRCT?
Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT) is an extremely rare and aggressive cancer that typically starts in the abdomen and spreads quickly to other organs. It primarily affects young adults, making it even more challenging to treat due to its fast progression and limited treatment options.
This diagnosis requires George to undergo treatments both locally and in Houston, while traveling regularly to MD Anderson for the specialized care he needs.
George is not just fighting cancer—he’s a devoted husband to Elizabeth and a loving father to their three beautiful children: Nicholas, George III, and Leah. If you know George, you know he’s the kind of person who’s always there for others, offering help and a smile, no matter the situation. Even now, amidst this unimaginable battle, George remains a source of strength and positivity for everyone around him.
The journey ahead will profoundly affect George and his family—mentally, physically, and financially—for a long time. They need all the love, support, and strength they can gather during this difficult time. Your kindness and encouragement mean the world to them as they navigate this together.
