Dear every person who has not yet strayed from their humanity,
We are Shahd and Majd, 20-year-old Palestinian twins from Gaza. Until October 7th, 7 am, we were students of Software Engineering. However, on that day, my family and I were faced with a harrowing situation, compelled to abandon our home and belongings as we fled south to preserve our lives and remain together. We chose to prioritize our lives over material possessions, dreams, and memories. Our family comprises five siblings and our parents. Our father, a 65-year-old Flight Maintenance Engineer, lost his job in 2000 when Gaza Airport was bombed. Initially hesitant to leave our home and land, his concern for our safety compelled him to relocate us southward.
Our home stands as a testament to our father’s dedication, built over many years of hard work and financial investment. We resided in this house for 32 years, and two years ago, our father renovated it at considerable expense ( 30,000 USD). Regrettably, our home fell victim to indiscriminate shelling during the Gaza Genocide, reducing it to rubble along with countless other civilian residences. Our father’s efforts, along with our cherished memories and aspirations, were destroyed in an instant. We now find ourselves homeless, our father burdened with profound sadness impossible to articulate. His life savings are tied up in real estate in Gaza, inaccessible to us.
Despite our best efforts, we depleted our financial reserves during the war, navigating through rampant monopolization while also witnessing our older siblings lose their livelihoods.
Majd and I want to continue our lives and resume our studies in a safe place. We are unsure of how long The events in Gaza will persist; we long for its end. However, even when it does end, our means of living have been obliterated. We doubt the feasibility of continuing our studies here in Gaza in the foreseeable future. We have heard about opportunities for students from Gaza to pursue education in Egypt, but these scholarships slip away the longer we remain here. At present, the fees for exiting to Egypt amount to $5,000 per person, an expense beyond our means. With heavy hearts, we appeal for your assistance so we may rekindle hope for our future once more
Thus, we humbly seek your assistance to rebuild our family home and resume our education, either locally or abroad, to regain what we lost.
Your contribution, no matter how small, holds immense value to us. If monetary support isn’t feasible, your help in sharing our story would be greatly appreciated.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Our beloved Home Before and After
