Support Gayle: Overcoming Unjust Fees
Donation protected
A terrible injustice in Nebraska is that landlords can legally charge exorbitant late fees and then evict tenants who can't afford them. I am helping Gayle, a 2nd grade schoolteacher in North Omaha, pro bono through my clinic work at I Be Black Girl. Gayle paid over $30,000 to a landlord even though the rent over the same time period was $27,000. But, due to being occasionally a few days late on rent (schoolteachers get paid in the middle of the month and rent is due on the first) she has never been able to catch up on late fees and they sharply compounded (almost $8000) and her landlord sued to evict her, only 55 days before the end of her lease! I was able to negotiate a reduction in late fees and STOP the eviction, but Gayle's funds are decimated by having to pay some of these fees and now she needs help with a deposit and first month's rent for a new place. I have her connected with the appropriate agency to provide some support but that will only cover part of what she will need. Thank you so much for considering helping Gayle! All funds will go towards rent and a deposit as well as any remaining amounts due to her current landlord.
