I am writing, as a friend, on behalf of Mollie and Matt Warner regarding their son, Gavin. Please read his story below!
On Tuesday, April 15th, sweet three-year-old Gavin was outside playing when a large tree branch struck his head. He was taken by ambulance to AI Dupont Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to tend to a skull fracture and moderate brain trauma. Gavin had to be sedated and intubated after his craniotomy for a few days to ensure good rest, efficient pain management, and time for monitoring things overall.
As the days passed, family and friends patiently awaited to see what Gavin would be capable of upon waking up, uncertain of what the accident could have potentially impacted as far as brain function. Doctors remained positive, so that was helpful in the long waiting process for Mollie and Matt.
After several long weeks, Gavin remains at the hospital. He has made a lot of progress since his injury. He receives OT, PT, and speech therapy now that he is more alert and stable. Gavin is also able to recognize and name people, follow commands, speak in complete sentences, and request snuggles! Along with these feats, he also has many challenges to overcome. Gavin is still weakened from the accident. He has a limited threshold of energy and pain tolerance. Gavin's dominant arm is weakened as well. He is also experiencing some difficulties with swallowing, drinking, and eating.
It is a relief to know that the recovery process for Gavin is moving in the right direction. Knowing this family, they are surrounded by support and love. However, with the emotional and mental stressors that these unexpected hardships can bring about, this extended hospital stay with many aspects of care will undoubtedly cause some financial stress as well. Matt and Mollie are both teachers and are planning to take FMLA time to be with Gavin, but they will eventually run out of any paid medical leave. That alone can be unsettling, which doesn't even account for the bills they will then be responsible for to cover Gavin's stay, care, and treatments.
As a friend of the family, I am humbly asking that if you are able to donate anything monetarily to help this beautiful family, they would be so grateful. Any of us, if in this same situation, would benefit from the same kind love and support. Any extra money from donations will then be donated to AI Dupont for future patients in need of assistance.
If all you can give at this time are prayers, that is amazing, too! Please pray for a full recovery. Thank God for placing His healing hands on Gavin and for providing peace for this family's hearts at this time and in the future as Gavin navigates getting his body back to what we hope will be normal for him!
Thank you, so much!
