I’m creating this on behalf of my brother Gavin.
Gavin was in a terrible motorcycle accident just earlier this week. This accident has him in critical condition in the ICU. As he is currently fighting for his life on the ventilator in a medically induced coma. He has no health insurance.
We are trying to raise money for medical expenses and long term care that he needs. To help take the load off Gavin as he is already doing so much. He has undergone one surgery already to fight infection and to stop the massive amount of blood he has lost.
I’m adding an update straight from our parents who are currently bedside with him: He will stay sedated with a breathing tube until at least Wednesday when they hopefully can do his last surgery for now. About 6 inches of his femur shattered in his right leg, which will require a permanent rod. His pelvis is broken in the front and back and has slightly shifted on both sides with multiple fractures throughout, requiring surgery to fix it. His right hip socket is cracked with slight dislocation. His L3 and L4 are fractured. His leg tissue surrounding the broken femur separated from the bone. When his femur came through the skin on his inner thigh, it left a 4" hole. He's lost over 21 units of blood; the human body has 7 units total. They have been constantly giving him blood products since he arrived at the hospital at 10:40 Sunday night, including over 21 units of blood, 3 units of platelets, and 2 units of something else. They had to cut his outer and inner thigh about 12 inches to release the pressure from internal bleeding; it was swollen about 4 times its normal size. They performed an external temporary stabilization of his femur today. Tomorrow they will go back in to address the disconnected leg tissue and cut out as much as necessary to combat infection until it's healed. Hopefully on Wednesday they can go back in to perform permanent rod stabilization on the femur, screws and plates to his pelvis, and screws to his tailbone, and possibly address his hip socket and fractured L3 and L4. They are waiting on a 3D rendering of images on the hip socket to decide what to do there. The orthopedic doctor said he will be in the hospital for "weeks"; they're just not sure how many. His injuries are extensive and very severe. The big thing now is blood loss and bone reconstruction. He is at the beginning of a very long recovery and is in a very critical state. His care is evolving by the minute at this point. He is in the ICU, of course, with a nurse assigned to him in his room every minute of every day. They are constantly working on him, constantly. I've never seen anything like it. It's a lot to take in; he's far from being out of the woods at this point. He was conscious when EMS got to the scene and in excruciating pain. They had to restrain him in the ICU because it took 4 nurses to hold him down when he woke up from pain when he first got there until they increased his pain meds and put him in a medically induced coma. They are hoping to wake him up on Wednesday or Thursday; it depends on his surgeries at this point. That's the bad... the good is, his injuries are survivable, but anything can happen at this stage. He's in bad shape. Really bad. The doctors are hopeful, but nothing is guaranteed at this point, they say.
