I apologize for the long story in advance.
In January of 2024, Gavin had some pain in his groin and his left leg started to swell. Due to his job having a strict policy for calling off (allowed 2 days call off within a 6-month period), Gavin lost his job. We ended up being evicted from the house we’d been living at for years. The swelling in his leg went away for a few weeks and we ended up moving into a hotel. During our stay at the hotel, his symptoms started to worsen. The swelling came back, along with high fevers, excruciating pain in his stomach, trouble walking, confusion, and dizziness. Gavin was always terrified of going to the hospital, so he put it off for months despite his family all telling him to go. Eventually, he gave in and in May of 2024, Gavin and I went to Windber Hospital. They ended up doing a CT of his abdomen and that night we found out that he had cancer. They transferred us to Conemaugh and he stayed there for two days before they decided to transfer him again to UPMC Shadyside. At Shadyside, they ended up doing a biopsy of the lymph node in his groin and we found out that he had DLBCL (Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma). He started chemo (R-CHOP) and ended up doing 6 rounds. He went home and was doing well for about 2 months. In October of 2024, the biopsy site ended up getting infected. He was given antibiotics and they expected it to go away. On November 4th, Gavin went in to have his final PET scan to make sure the cancer was gone. On the 7th, the oncologist called and said that the chemo stopped working so the cancer was back in his abdomen and groin. On the 8th, we had to come out to Pittsburgh and have some labs done and some scans. Due to his labs and him being septic from the infection, they decided to hospitalize him in the Medical ICU. Now the plan is to give him CAR-T, an experimental treatment that takes the T cells from his body, genetically modifies them, and then they inject them back in so that the T cells kill off the cancer cells. His extraction date is set for December 2nd. He is getting ICE (chemo) to hold him over until then. He will then have to wait a few weeks for the T cells to be sent out and modified. Later in December, he will come back in and have the T cells injected back into his body.
We know that these are tough times for everyone. But we are asking that if anyone is willing to help or can help - any help will be appreciated. The funds would be used for any medical expenses that may pop up and trips back and forth to Pittsburgh since we do live a bit of a distance away. Also, they would go towards any bills that we have to pay during this time.
Thank you all so much in advance.
