Our lives changed in an instant. What was supposed to be a routine drive home after a fun evening with friends turned into a nightmare. My husband, Gary, became the victim of a senseless act when a large piece of concrete was thrown from a freeway overpass. It struck him in the head, crushing the front left side of his skull and the entire left side of his face. His nose, left eye, and cheek were shattered, and fractures spread throughout his head and face. Gary has lost all sight in his left eye. The severity of his injuries required him to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where he underwent 10 hours of surgery to save his life. This horrific event has changed Gary’s life forever. Doctors are still assessing the damage to his right eye and monitoring his hearing on the left side.
Gary, my loving husband of 30 years, is a cherished friend to so many. He’s been a proud Puyallup resident and a dedicated employee of Weyerhaeuser for 36+ years, known for his hard work, loyalty, and kindness. Gary was on the brink of retirement, ready to join me as we began to enjoy the next chapter of our life with family and friends.
Now, instead of planning for that well-earned milestone, Gary faces unimaginable challenges. He is working hard to regain the strength and coordination needed to feed himself and walk. He is also learning to communicate again, as finding the right words does not always come easily. The extent of his memory loss is still being determined. The idea of Gary returning to his old self is highly unlikely, and he will require months, if not years, of intensive rehabilitation and medical care.
If you know Gary, you know his heart. He’s the guy who never hesitated to lend a hand, share a laugh, or brighten someone’s day. He’s always been the one to show up for others, and now it’s our turn to show up for him.
