Gary Collier has always lived life on his own terms. A proud Marine and Navy Sailor who served as a cook in Vietnam and on the USS John F Kennedy Air Carrier, Gary is the father of two sons, Ronnie and Jim, and the grandfather of nine. He lost his beloved wife Carol two years ago, and now, as he spends his final days in home hospice, his family is coming together to honor his wishes and legacy.
Gary’s life has been defined by generosity and hard work. For 25 years, he worked as a custodian at Grandville Elementary, teaching nearly every child who came through his door how to cook—his cinnamon pancakes are legendary. He also worked as a train engineer for South Pacific, loved fishing, was a skilled pool player, and always had a soft spot for dogs and the outdoors. Gary’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, and Carol’s was the Fourth of July—a testament to the special bond they shared. He’s always been a country boy at heart, fiercely independent, and deeply patriotic.
Right now, Gary’s care is being managed at home by his son and daughter-in-law, who are balancing work and caregiving while also covering his rent and bills. The military will honor Gary with a salute, funeral, and interment alongside Carol, but the family must cover the costs of his cremation and ongoing care. Funds raised will help with these immediate expenses, support his caregivers so they can take time off to be with him and grieve, and, if possible, help fly his son out to say goodbye. Every contribution will help Gary’s family honor his life and ensure he is remembered with the dignity and love he deserves.
