Support Garrett Muncrief's Road to Recovery

Hi all,

Garrett was in Arcata last weekend celebrating a friend's birthday. On their walk back to the AirBnb around 11pm on Friday February 2nd, Garrett was struck by an intoxicated driver of a truck and suffered major injuries.

Fortunately, the ambulance was able to arrive within 5 minutes of being called and rushed him to ICU. He suffered a broken leg, two broken hands, broken ribs, a broken back, road rash and gashes along his body, a ruptured kidney, and a tear in his aorta. The driver was arrested.

Daily updates are below and I will continue posting them to update you of his progress. We don't want him to have to stress about medical bills and time off work during his recovery, so any help financially to him is so appreciated. To everyone who has sent texts, flowers, prayers, and checked-in, it means the world to Garrett and he is so thankful for your support.

Saturday Update:
The cardiologist visited with us and explained that his heart procedure is priority. It has a two way path, one being they go in and do the stint, and the second being they do the stint plus as shunt in his left arm to his carotid. It is dependent on how far and long the tear in the aorta is. They won't know until they get the camera inside to see. Also, the kidney needs to clot off before the surgery can be done, so the plan is tomorrow at 8am if everything looks stable.

Sunday Update:
Garrett made it out of surgery this around 11AM and is back in his room. They're hoping to extubate him today.

Monday Update:
Extubating didn't happen yesterday, but hoping for today. They are planning another surgery on his leg today to put a rod in. He's responding to commands and knows we are here. They did a breathing trial to confirm that he is now able to breathe on his own. He's using his hands to do thumbs up and thumbs down and can shake his head. The swelling has gone down a lot, especially in his face.

Monday Update #2:
The leg surgery is being postponed to tomorrow, but the tube is out! His first sentence was "I don't like to talk" :)

Tuesday Update:
Surgery with his leg went well.

Wednesday Update:
Garrett asked me what happened today, and I explained the situation so now he is aware. It's hard to digest but he's very thankful to be alive and was in tears knowing his friends are here and asking about him.

We're feeling very hopeful with his recovery, he knows it's going to be a long road but he is pushing hard. He even wanted to get out of bed today!
