Let’s Grow Something Beautiful Together - A Brand-New Greenhouse

The Garden Club of Teaneck is in dire need of a new Greenhouse. Please support our community effort! The money collected will help fund the new Greenhouse, its services, as well as our new and old community programs.

Why a new greenhouse?

Our current space dates back to 1932 and now needs serious maintenance. Its roof no longer lets sufficient light through and has several holes in it causing inside flooding. Its outdated venting system requires the manual turning of large, rusty wheels that mechanically open vents to let excess heat out, and some no longer work.

It can no longer support the growing needs of our community programs, school workshops, and sustainable planting efforts. A new, modern greenhouse will allow us to:
  • Host more youth and senior programs
  • Grow more native plants and vegetables
  • Create a practical learning center for nearby schools
  • Create a welcoming space for all to connect with nature

Our goal: $150,000

We have some funding so far—savings from many years of plant sales, and a generous allocation from the town of Teaneck. To move forward we need an additional $150,000 to make a new greenhouse a reality.

Every donation - large or small - brings us one step closer to a greener, more vibrant Teaneck. All funds will go directly towards construction, equipment, and educational resources.

This isn’t just a building - it’s a living symbol of what we can accomplish when we come together as a community.

Who is GCT and What Do We Do?

The Garden Club of Teaneck is a longstanding nonprofit community organization dedicated to promoting gardening, environmental sustainability, and community engagement through education and service. Established in 1932, we operate a town-owned greenhouse and support activities including educational programs for children and seniors, presentations on gardening/nature, and public beautification projects.

Mission and Activities: Our club aims to stimulate interest in gardening and foster environmental stewardship through education, hands-on experiences, and community service. We host monthly expert talks, hands-on workshops, and annual plant sales featuring diverse plants and vegetables, many of which we grow ourselves.

Educational Outreach: Each spring, approximately 375 local school children participate in greenhouse gardening education, receiving plants to nurture at home. Junior Garden Club members also learn vegetable cultivation, and many go on to create their own vegetable gardens at home.

Community Contributions: Our club maintains public gardens including a Pollinator Garden, a Children’s Reading Garden, a formal sitting garden, the town’s Herb Garden and a beautification project for the Fire Department. We donate surplus vegetables to a food bank and award a scholarship to local high school graduates. We also collaborate with local seniors and nursing homes and host the Bergen County Bonsai Club meetings. The club informally supports community gatherings, field trips, and group learning activities among its members.

Membership and Volunteerism: About 150 members volunteer our efforts, contributing roughly 22,000 hours annually. The organization has no paid staff.

Financial Support: Funding comes from membership dues and proceeds from the annual plant sale. The Township of Teaneck provides the greenhouse facility, utilities, recycling, and some maintenance support.

Leadership and Governance: The organization is governed by elected volunteer officers with diverse professional backgrounds in horticulture, education, business, and nonprofit management.

Now, we’re reaching out to you to help us plant the seeds of our most ambitious dream yet: A Brand-New Greenhouse
