Gail Harney has been my dear friend for many years. We met while she was working at Riverwood Middle School as a teacher’s aide in Special Ed and later in the attendance office. Our bond grew quickly, especially since I also have a special needs son. Gail, now 69, has spent her life caring for her son Allen, who has Williams Syndrome and requires constant attention due to his own medical needs, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Gail left her husband prior to Allen being born, so she has raised him alone for 43 years. She has faced these challenges as a single mom, having bravely left an abusive relationship to protect herself and Allen.
Nine years ago, Gail was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Since then, she has endured countless chemo and radiation treatments at MD Anderson, working well past retirement age just to keep her medical insurance. Recently, her health took a turn for the worse when scans revealed the cancer had spread to her brain and liver. After weeks in the hospital and rehab, she is now home with Allen, but her strength is fading. Despite everything, Gail continues her treatments for Allen’s sake—he is her world, and she is his only caregiver.
Gail is now facing overwhelming financial burdens. Her medical bills have grown so much that some are already in collections with MD Anderson, and she is struggling to keep up with new insurance deductibles and urgent needs to make her bathroom ADA accessible. She also needs a specialized bed mattress and regular caregiving support to help with daily tasks. Gail has always been the one to help others, but now she needs her community to rally around her. Your kindness and generosity—especially during this Christmas season—will make a real difference in their lives, and I am deeply grateful for any help you can give.
