Help Support Our Son, Gage, in His Fight for Recovery

Donation protected
We are asking for prayers, love, and support for our son, Gage Brumfield, who has faced an unimaginable medical crisis and continues to fight every single day for his life.

It all began suddenly on Sunday, September 14, when our 19-year-old son Gage, who had been completely healthy with no past medical history, started experiencing severe heart palpitations, and his pulse skyrocketed to 238 beats per minute. We rushed him to Rancho Springs Hospital, where doctors quickly realized something was terribly wrong — but at first, they couldn't figure out what was happening. They were baffled by his condition and shocked that someone so young and healthy could be in such critical danger.

Gage went into heart failure, and doctors were afraid his heart could stop at any moment. At one point, his heart was working at only 17%, an incredibly dangerous and critical level. His heart rate had been at such a high level for so long that it eventually affected his other organs.

At Rancho Springs Hospital, in an attempt to restore his heart rhythm, Gage was shocked two times, but unfortunately, neither worked.

Gage was then transferred to Temecula Valley Hospital, where he underwent surgery to implant a balloon in his heart to help it pump blood and was intubated during the procedure. It was during this surgery that doctors realized his kidneys had failed and his liver was damaged, and they saw that his arms and legs had become purple with a very faint pulse due to severely reduced blood circulation. Doctors attempted to shock his heart again during the surgery — which also failed — but the team worked tirelessly to stabilize him.

Recognizing the urgency, Temecula Valley Hospital immediately reached out to UCSD in hopes of getting Gage admitted and transferred to the specialized care he needed. While doctors wanted to airlift him, he had too much life-saving equipment to be safely flown, so he was transferred by ambulance while remaining intubated, arriving at UCSD Medical Center’s Acute Critical Cardiac ICU. He continued dialysis and other intensive treatments, fighting every step of the way.

For 22 long days, we stayed by Gage’s side as doctors and nurses worked tirelessly around the clock to save him. Through every procedure, every setback, and every long night, he never gave up. Through this challenging time, our unwavering faith in God’s miracles was the only thing that truly got us through.

At UCSD, Gage underwent extensive DNA testing and evaluations, which finally revealed answers — he had inherited a LAMA4 gene mutation, a rare condition that affects the heart. To help protect him from future episodes of ventricular storm (V-Storm), doctors implanted a heart simulator in his chest.

Today, Gage continues to fight for his life with ongoing treatments and has a long road ahead of him. He will need continued medical care in the future, including follow-ups, dialysis, and specialized treatments. His strength, courage, and faith continue to inspire everyone around him, and we thank God every day that he is still with us.

During Gage’s hospitalization, we stayed with him the entire 22 days. My husband was unable to work during that time, and it has been a financial hardship. Still, we trust that God always provides, and we are so grateful for the love and support that has surrounded us.

Many friends have asked how they can help — with gas cards, gift cards, or a meal. This GoFundMe is a way for everyone who has reached out to be part of Gage’s journey and help ensure he receives the best care and treatment possible.

Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward medical bills, travel costs, lost wages, and ongoing care as we walk this long road of recovery with Gage. If you're unable to give, please continue to keep him in your prayers and share his story.

From the bottom of our hearts — thank you for your love, generosity, and faith.
