As many of you may be aware, and for those who may not, my courageous daughter Gabriella, age 26, has been triumphantly battling kidney ailments since birth. At 21 months old, Gabriella was formally diagnosed with minimal change disease, which subsequently progressed to nephrotic syndrome and ultimately to Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare kidney disease characterized by the development of scar tissue in the glomeruli, the kidney's filtering units. This damage enables protein to leak into the urine, impacting the kidney's filtration function. Despite facing a setback with pancreatitis in October, which was unfortunately overlooked by our local hospital in South Carolina, resulting in the cancellation of her insurance and necessitating out-of-pocket payment for her medical expenses, Gabriella's resilience has been an inspiration to us all. Consequently, Gabriella was required to undergo dialysis three times a week, for three hours each session. She received her first kidney transplant on May 5, 2009, from myself, her mother, and her second transplant on May 29, 2012, from a close family friend. Her third transplant will be donated by her sister Sophia. We are currently en route to pre-operative preparations at Hackensack Meridian Hospital, with the expectation that her transplant would take place on August 18. However, we received a call a few days ago from the financial coordinator stating that while her surgeon is covered by insurance, the hospital is not. Consequently, we have been informed that Gabriella's transplant will not take place as scheduled on August 18 and will be cancelled. As you can imagine, this is an exceedingly stressful situation for our entire family. Yet, we remain hopeful and determined, knowing that Gabriella's strength and courage will carry her through this challenging time. We will be interviewed by Fox 5 News, which has been following Gabriella's story for years, and we are currently working on a new segment, albeit one that has been postponed due to the insurance company's decision not to cover the surgery. Gabriella has been fortunate enough to have the same surgeon for all three transplants, and he is presently advocating for her situation, which he deems an emergency requiring immediate attention. Despite her critical condition, Gabriella's request for a kidney transplant has been denied. As you can imagine, the constant travel between Jersey and South Carolina, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding her treatment, has been incredibly challenging for our family. However, we remain optimistic, knowing that Gabriella's journey is far from over, and we are confident that she will continue to inspire us all with her remarkable strength and resilience. Gabriella's unwavering courage and perseverance in the face of adversity serve as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path forward and inspiring us to remain steadfast in our pursuit of a brighter future for her. Her unshakeable optimism and determination are a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience, and we are honored to stand by her side as she continues to defy the odds and push forward with unwavering resolve.
