Gabriel’s journey has turned my brother Francisco, my sister-in-law Angela, and their whole family’s world upside down. Gabriel is my 6-year-old nephew, and what first seemed like a problem with his tonsil quickly became something much more serious. After multiple doctor visits, medicine, an ENT referral, and surgery to drain the swelling and take a biopsy, they received the heartbreaking call that Gabriel had Large B-Cell lymphoma, a form of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. They were sent to New Orleans Children’s Hospital, where more testing showed that Gabriel is at stage 1. We are so thankful it had not spread beyond his throat, but he immediately began chemotherapy and has already faced long hospital stays, fevers, low blood counts, and even a blood transfusion.

Gabriel now spends a week or more at a time in the hospital during treatment, and the strain on his parents has been overwhelming. My brother is doing everything he can to keep working and support the family, while my sister-in-law stays at the hospital with Gabriel most of the time. With one income, medical bills starting to arrive, frequent travel to and from the hospital, and the daily cost of food during these stays, the burden has become so heavy for them and for Gabriel’s siblings at home, Gracie, Talon, and Elijah.
