On December 1st my sister in law Karen went into the hospital not feeling quite right 20 weeks into a complicated pregnancy. They determined she was in preterm labor and needed to take emergent action to save Karen's life. She was rushed into emergency surgery. Matt and Karen lost their beautiful baby at 20 weeks, and Matt came minutes from losing Karen. After a lengthy surgery, in which she lost over 4 times her blood volume, the amazing team at UMASS Memorial were able to save Karen's life. She remained in a medically induced coma in the ICU in critical condition and required a second surgery which was successful, and she remained in the ICU for several days before being released to a regular room. Karen will be home soon but has a lengthy recovery still and will not be able to return to work for quite some time. They will also both be going through a lengthy emotional recovery as well as they mourn the loss of their child that Karen bravely carried for 20 weeks, knowing that this could be a possible outcome. Matts employer has been very generous, but there is a good chance he will need to use unpaid FMLA to stay home and assist Karen's recovery as she will be unable to fully care for three children under 5. Please consider donating to help a family in their time of need. Karen and Matt have done so much throughout their lives to help so many others, and now they can use some help of their own.
