Who are we?

Korea Bridge Initiative (KBI) is a community service organization led by Fulbright English Teaching Assistants and is affiliated with the Korean American Educational Commission (KAEC). KBI provides free, fun, and educational English camps to underprivileged students across South Korea. KBI was started in 2012 by two very talented and highly motivated Fulbright English Teaching Assistants.

What is our impact?

Since our founding, KBI has taught hundreds of students with lessons focused on promoting communication, creativity, and American culture. In 2025, we taught 24 students at our two English camps in Pohang and Gwangju. Our students have consistently given positive reviews about our lessons that you can see on our website.

Who do we help?

According to our 2025 student recruitment survey, 79% of our students do not regularly attend English hagwons (private after-school academies). Furthermore, 24% mentioned not having adequate opportunities to develop their English skills. 92% of our students attend high schools in rural towns (읍) and townships (면).

Why do we need your financial support?

In 2026, we want to expand our annual programming from two English camps to seven English camps. We hope to host the following camps:

Pohang
  • Two camps (September and November)
  • Pohang is an industrial city that is known for providing factory workers with steel manufactoring jobs
  • KBI focuses on supporting students in rural and vocational schools

Gwangju
  • Two camps (September and November)
  • Gwangju is located in the heart of the Jeolla region, which is full of towns dedicated to agricultural production
  • KBI focuses on supporting students in rural or agricultural schools

Cheongju (New Location!)
  • Three camps (September, October, November)
  • Cheongju is located in the middle of the country, and has welcomed a large number of refugees and immigrants from Post-Soviet countries
  • KBI focuses on supporting students who can not attend hagwons (after school academies) due to financial hardship

We hope to use your donations to cover the following expenses:
  • Round trip bus fares for students (especially helpful forstudents living in rural areas)
  • Round trip bus fares for volunteer teachers
  • Classroom supplies and art materials
  • Snacks and water for students and volunteers
  • Name tags, completion certificates, and other logistical items
