A few months ago, Freddie W. Downs was suddenly struck by intense pain that led him to seek urgent medical care. After a series of tests, doctors discovered that Freddie was facing third stage squamous cell carcinoma in his mouth. To make matters even more complicated, his heart rate was dangerously low, requiring the immediate implantation of a permanent pacemaker before he could even begin cancer treatments.


As Freddie started his journey through treatment, another challenge arose. While he was away from home, a waterline inside his house broke, causing significant damage. Although insurance will eventually help after deductibles are met, the process of cleaning up and restoring his home has been overwhelming, especially while he is already battling illness. On top of all this, the rising cost of fuel has become a major burden, as Freddie faces the reality of traveling for 75 scheduled treatments.


Freddie has dedicated nearly four decades to working full-time at Certainteed and served over a decade in the US Army.
