On 12/23/25 Fred Smith was wrongfully charged and arrested for using ‘counterfeit money’ at Kwik Trip. But what actually happened is that Fred had a novelty $100 bill that was not at all an attempt at being a fake $100, mixed in with his other cash and debit card. He left that along with his debit card (which had more than enough to cover his bill). Kwik Trip failed to authenticate the money he used. Then proceeded to call the cops and officers arrived to Fred’s house and arrested him.

Even after family went up to KT and made it right by paying the amount owed (which they could have put on his own debit card).

Many know Fred and anyone who does, loves him. He’s a 100% disabled Vietnam Veteran, a widow, a grandpa, a 40+ year resident, a small business owner, and a staple community member. He’s the team grandpa. He was a coach, ref, mentor. And he means the world to so many.

Sadly, his health has deteriorated recently. He had yet another knee replacement surgery, which resulted in an infection. He has PTSD, anxiety, depression, and many other health problems.

And the most heartbreaking part, he just spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, in jail, away from his only family. He was denied the medical care he needed and begged for.

We have many recordings and proof of his denial of proper care.

Fred is always there for others, and now he needs us.

A grandpa who just sold many of his antiques and belongings to raise money of his own to take his only two grandchildren to Disney, just had to spend that savings on an attorney instead.

Any amount helps towards his attorney fees, as we continue to fight to clear his name and all of the injustice he has faced due to the incompetence of many people.

Please share and continue to spread awareness for this injustice done to a man who deserves to spend what life he has left in peace.
