Frankie has been fighting Type 1 diabetes since he was a teenager. Over the years, this disease has brought countless hospitalizations and complications that have deeply impacted our lives. Despite these challenges, we committed ourselves to living healthier, doing everything we could to improve his quality of life and keep him functioning as well as possible.

In 2023, Frankie’s health began to decline rapidly. We sought out new doctors, followed new treatment plans, and held onto hope — but unfortunately, his condition continued to worsen. Eventually, he was let go from his job due to frequent illness-related absences, which resulted in the loss of his health insurance and the majority of our household income.

Until now, we have managed to keep our home and meet basic needs through my full-time job and the generous support of family. But we are now facing the most difficult chapter yet.

Frankie is currently hospitalized with stage 5 kidney disease and is preparing to begin dialysis, as well as pursue a kidney and pancreas transplant. He was previously denied disability when his kidney function was at 23%, and also denied Medicaid coverage. Because of this, we were forced to wait until his kidney function dropped to 9% before doctors could push to start dialysis in order to qualify him for medical insurance.

We are still awaiting final approval, but we are hopeful. Dialysis is a necessary step toward stabilizing his health, and insurance approval is essential so we can finally meet with the transplant team — who cannot see patients without active medical coverage.
