Support Francesca: Confronting MS with Courage

This is a fundraiser for an amazing person who needs help to pay for medical expenses related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Please consider donating. While Fran has been able to support herself for years, this time she needs our support so she can go back to her country Peru to receive her MS annual treatment.

The Remarkable Journey of Francesca Vargas

Francesca was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in July of 2021. All of a sudden, one day she woke up feeling dizzy and very off balance. She thought it probably was just the stress of dealing with finals exams at college. But unfortunately days passed and the worst was still yet to come. Her symptoms very quickly got worse. She experienced vertigo and double vision. In her own words, “the most scary part was when I completely lost my balance, could not walk on my own and had a serious vision condition called 'nystagmus' (an involuntary eye movement which may cause the eye to rapidly move from side to side)”.

Francesca had to start with the most aggressive treatment for MS, based on her Neurologist’s recommendation, after analyzing the results of her brain MRI. The MRI showed 11 lesions on her brain. An active lesion on the left part of the brain was what caused her first relapse.

Francesca is extremely lucky, she completely recovered from her first MS attack and currently her health is stable. Her treatment keeps her from having another relapse which will worsen her overall health. It is critical that she continues her treatments on schedule so she can continue having a great quality of life. Missing a treatment is not an option, but traveling to her home country and paying for the treatments is.

Relocating to Colorado, she embarked on a new journey as a coach for the NeuroPong Program, enriching the lives of individuals with Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Dementia. Francesca’s impact on people’s lives is immeasurable.

Since both Francesca and I have MS, we formed a natural bond as I learned table tennis under her tutelage. Her positive attitude is infectious, and my balance and general health improved over the weeks and months I attended and played. As my table tennis skills improved, Francesca encouraged me and others to consider playing in the Huntsman World Senior Games, the largest annual multi-sport senior competition in the world. I was not able to attend but I am pleased to say that with her coaching and encouragement others attended the Games in Utah, last October. My friend, Mark, who also has MS, went and earned two Gold Medals in Table Tennis. He said, “With her coaching and belief in me, I learned that I can be a victor and not a victim”. I have personally witnessed Francesca’s extraordinary commitment to helping others, especially in the MS community. She is not only my coach, but also my dear friend.

Francesca has spent the last year offering table tennis lessons in America but more than that, she is an inspiration for more people like us.

Overcoming a drastic Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis at age of 25 is not easy, takes a lot of courage and resilience. I am sure that we can help Fran to reach her financial goal to receive treatment soon so she will be healthy and able to keep helping others through table tennis.
