Support for Yosuke Hasumi

On December 5th, Yosuke was driving home from a day of skiing up Mt.Cain, and he hit black ice coming around a corner. His vehicle rolled down an embankment, and he ended up pinned in his vehicle. Fortunately, witnesses contacted emergency services immediately, and he was taken to Campbell River Hospital. They determined that he had fractured his spine at the base of his neck, and suffered a brain bleed. From there, Yosuke was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital and rushed into emergency surgery to fuse his vertebrae at the break to prevent further damage. At that point, Yosuke was unable to breathe on his own and had a ventilation tube inserted. Up until yesterday, he had only been able to communicate with slight nods and facial expressions. Yesterday he underwent surgery to have a trach tube inserted with hopes that he will be able to communicate verbally, as he is still unable to breathe on his own. Due to the area and nature of the spinal fracture, Yosuke currently does not have the use of his arms or legs, and it is too early to tell if he will ever regain his mobility.
First and foremost, Yosuke is a full-time co-parent to two incredible children. He is a lifelong outdoor enthusiast with a passion for skiing, dirt and motorbiking, and more recently rock climbing. His role in his community of Cumberland is one of engagement and support. Yosuke never hesitates to help lend a hand to his family, friends or community, and never asking for anything in return. Everyone in his life can attest to Yosuke’s kindness, compassion, and love of the outdoors.
Yosuke works as a freelance graphic designer, which unfortunately does not provide extended health or disability benefits. He has an amazing support system, however, they primarily reside in the Comox Valley. We are reaching out to all of you on behalf of an astounding father, son, brother, friend and community member at a time when he desperately needs it. It is unknown how long Yosuke will remain at Vancouver General Hospital or how long his road to recovery will be. Yosuke and his support system need significant funds to ensure that he has a home to come back to, for his children and supports to remain by his side, and help to cover costs of extensive rehabilitation, accessibility equipment and home modifications. At this point the amount that is needed is unknown, but we can guess it will be, at a minimum, in the tens of thousands.
Please help Yosuke, his family and support system keep afloat during this unfathomable time by donating what you can. We know these times are tough for many but any bit will help relieve some of the financial burden from this devastating accident. If you can not donate please share this far and wide.
