If you grew up in Eaton Rapids, chances are Willis showed up in your life at exactly the moment you needed someone to believe in you. For 30 years, he was the teacher who noticed the quiet kid, the coach who stayed after practice, the steady voice telling students, “You can do this.” That belief shaped generations

In 2014, that belief culminated in a State Championship for Eaton Rapids girls’ basketball. It wasn’t just a banner in a gym. It was a moment that united a town. But wins and titles were never the point for Willis. Family and community always were.

Beyond traditional classroom subjects, Willis created a unique hunting and fishing class at Eaton Rapids, a program designed to teach responsibility, respect for the outdoors, and practical life skills. He intentionally reached students who might not otherwise have been exposed to those opportunities, opening doors that would not have existed without him.

His investment did not stop at graduation. Many former students that he has met over the years still stay in contact. They call him for advice. They stop by to talk. They seek him out not just as a former teacher or coach, but as a trusted mentor and friend.

On January 16, 2026, Willis officially retired after three decades of service. Retirement was meant to be a season devoted fully to family, more time together, more moments with his grandchildren, and the chance to slow down and enjoy what matters most.

Shortly after retiring, he went to the doctor. What began as routine appointments quickly led to further testing and difficult conversations. Doctors have confirmed that Willis is facing Stage 4 cancer. Additional testing is underway, and more detailed information about the specific locations and treatment plan is expected later this week.

Willis is a devoted father to Kayla and Kraig, and to Bailey and Brooke. He is also a proud grandfather to Kinsey and Ryder, Kayla and Chelsie’s children, a role he treasures deeply. Anyone who has seen him with his grandkids knows that this is where his heart truly lives.

Kraig currently lives in Japan, and we are hoping to bring him home to spend meaningful time with his dad during this season. Part of the funds raised may help cover travel expenses so our family can be together.

The financial impact of this diagnosis has been immediate. Between medical treatments, specialist visits, travel for care, medications, and everyday living expenses, the costs are adding up quickly. Our goal is to ease that burden so Willis and our family can focus fully on treatment and time together.

Funds raised will go toward medical bills and treatment costs, travel for specialized care, medications and supportive therapies, and daily living expenses during this fight.

Willis has spent 30 years investing in this community and in the lives of others. Now we are asking the community he faithfully served to stand with him.

If you are able to give, we are deeply grateful. If you are unable to give, sharing this page and keeping Willis in your prayers means more than you know.

Thank you for supporting a man whose greatest legacy has always been his family and the countless lives he has touched.
