Hi! My name is Miguel Amortegui, I am a photojournalist and a participatory photographer facilitator. I work with communities around the world trying to provide them a voice through photography.
I would like to trade a story with you, if my story moves your heart maybe you can help me to move this cause forward.
A few years ago I went to Lima , Peru to work with a community on the outskirts of the city. This little neighbourhood was located at the top of a big mountain and it was very hard to get there, especially in the rainy season. The name of the place was Virgen de la Candelaria. Villa de la Esperanza (Village of hope).
Santos the community leader told me that they decided to call it this name because all the people that took refuge in this mountain were looking for a better life, a new hope away from the violence and the poverty that the country was suffering at the time.
"Starting was really hard", said Santos. "When we arrived here we knew that we had to do everything ourselves, no help from the government, or anybody else. Slowly, slowly we built small houses and created a strong community based on the support and collaboration of all the neighbourhood. We brought water and electricity all by ourselves, we built a school, a park with recycled material, everything!."
This community is one of the strongest and inspiring places that I have worked due to the tenacity, hard work and solidarity that all the members of the community have.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 has made things very difficult for all the habitants of Villa Esperanza. Due to the quarantine many people have lost their jobs and are struggling to eat. They have been working on community kitchens but food and money is running low and many of them are skipping meals.
Santos, decided to contact me today to see if I could help. He explained to me that £100 pounds can help to feed around 400 people per day.
I am putting this Go Funding together to see if we can get enough money to help these people in these hard moments.
Whatever you can spare would be really appreciated and would make a huge difference to this wonderful community.
Thank you for your help and please share this cause.
