Valerie is my 3-year-old daughter, and she has faced more challenges than most people do in a lifetime. She was born stillbirth and needed 12 minutes of CPR to start her heart again. Since that day, she has battled a list of disabilities and global brain damage. Right now, Valerie is in the PICU for the second week in a row, fighting RSV, pneumonia, and partially collapsed lungs, along with a dystonia crisis. She is on a DNR and is going on hospice care, but she continues to fight with incredible strength. We are by her side every moment, loving her and supporting her through it all. My mom is a fierce woman who has always been there for our family. After more than 13 years at her job, she retired to become Valerie’s live-in CNA, caring for her full time. She went back to school to get her license so she could provide the best care possible for Valerie. When Valerie is admitted to the hospital, my mom can’t be paid by the state, which means we lose the income we rely on to cover our bills. We have tried everything to make ends meet, cutting expenses wherever we can, but it’s just not enough right now.
