This Fourth of July weekend, our Lexington community suffered an unimaginable loss with the passing of an extraordinary young man, Tyler Smith.

To my son, Zach, their lifelong friend Ethan, and many others lucky enough to know him, Tyler wasn't just a friend—he was a brother.

Many of you may have known Tyler from his warm smile while working the register at Kroger or serving up a Hot-N-Ready pizza at Little Caesars. No matter where he was, Tyler had a way of making people feel welcome. He was a hardworking young man with a bright future, having just graduated from Lafayette High School. This was supposed to be the summer he celebrated with friends before beginning the next chapter of his life and chasing his dreams.

Our family has known Tyler since he and Zach attended kindergarten together at Wellington. Along with a wonderful group of kids from our community, they grew up side by side through elementary school, middle school, and high school. Watching them become young adults has been one of life's greatest joys.

Tyler was the kind of young man every parent hopes their child will become. He was quick-witted, genuinely funny, incredibly respectful, and had a heart full of kindness. Every conversation with an adult ended with a "Yes, ma'am," "No, sir," or "Thank you." Those simple words reflected the character of a young man who treated everyone with dignity and respect.

His smile could brighten any room, and his loyalty to his family and lifelong friends never wavered. Tyler never met a stranger. If you were fortunate enough to know him, your life was richer because of it. If you never had the chance, you truly missed meeting one of the rare young people who left every person a little better than he found them.

Tyler and his mother, Lindsey, were an incredible team. They shared a bond built on unconditional love, unwavering support, and deep devotion. Tyler adored his mom, and she loved him with everything she had. He was her entire world, and she poured her heart into raising an exceptional young man.

Today, she faces every parent's worst nightmare.
