In June, my brother Tony’s roommates reached out to us, concerned because they hadn’t seen or heard from him in three days. After calling hospitals in Kansas City, we found out he had been admitted to Truman Medical Center after being found unconscious—exactly where remains unknown. He had suffered several seizures and two strokes.
From there, he was placed in a nursing home—the only one in Kansas City that accepted his insurance and offered skilled therapy for rehab. He worked hard and made progress, but he never fully recovered. Over time, he continued to improve, but about four weeks ago, the nursing home called to inform us of a sudden decline in his mental status and increased weakness.
We had him sent to the hospital, where, after extensive testing, doctors diagnosed him with hydrocephalus and viral meningitis. After two weeks in the hospital, they told us there was nothing more they could do and recommended hospice care.
On Friday, my mother and I brought him home so we could care for him ourselves. Gentiva Hospice has been a tremendous blessing, ensuring we had all the necessary equipment and support by the time we arrived home. We are so grateful for God’s provision in this difficult time.
Unfortunately, he has continued to decline, and we have now started comfort meds.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for our family as we care for Tony and prepare for his passing. While our hearts are heavy, we are also working to ensure he has a proper farewell.
Every contribution, no matter the amount, means so much to our family during this heartbreaking time.
If you would like to visit and say your goodbyes, please do. 420 W 1st in Hutchinson. I know he would love to see you.
Thank you all for your prayers, love, and support. We are leaning on our faith and cherishing every moment we have left with him.
Update: Tony passed away February 17th. He took his last breath at 10:07pm. He was surrounded by those who loved him. We meet at the funeral home Thursday. We will update everyone as to when services will be as soon as we know.
We would like to thank everyone for their generosity, prayers, support, food, company, and phone calls during this time. We love you all so much!
