As some of you may know, my parent's dear friend, Tony Wellner, was diagnosed on August 29, 2022, with a very rare form of cancer- Triple positive hit B-cell Lymphoma with MYC, BL2 and CL2. His treatment consists of a very strong chemotherapy regimen every 21 days, requiring a six-day hospital stay, for 24-hour chemotherapy treatment.

He has already had five rounds of this strong chemo. It has killed off a lot of the cancer cells, but sadly some cells are not responding to this treatment. The next plan of treatment is CAR T-cell immunotherapy in Seattle at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

This treatment requires Tony to live within 20 minutes of the hospital for 5-8 weeks. Fred Hutch has two housing options, but unfortunately, housing is not covered by his insurance. He is headed to Seattle on March 21 for 11 days of testing, and then cell collection on the 31st. Cell collection is similar to dialysis. The T-cells are collected and then his blood is returned to his body. The cells are sent to a lab where scientists work to turn them into cancer-killing cells. This process can take 3-4 weeks to complete. When the engineered cells are ready, Tony will receive three days of lymphodepletion chemotherapy to make room for the new cells. After his cell infusion, he will have daily appointments for the next four weeks to monitor for side effects.
