Dearest Friends,
The morning after Easter, members of the Sibitz-Smith family left Northern California to visit beloved family in Oregon for spring break. Lawrence, a dad of four and a longtime teacher in the West Contra Costa school district, his twins Annika and Davin, both 18-year-old seniors, and Annika’s boyfriend Ivan traveled by car up Highway 5 toward the Beaver State. In a tragic car accident Monday evening, Davin was killed. Lawrence was critically injured and sent to a hospital with a specialty burn unit. Annika was life-flighted to a Level II trauma hospital in the area. Ivan sustained a broken arm and was able to provide first responders with valuable information identifying everyone in the vehicle.
Elizabeth Sibitz, Annika and Davin’s mom, traveled Tuesday morning with her and Lawrence’s other two children, Karissa and Ariel, to be at Annika’s side in Oregon. Elizabeth is a longtime special education teacher at Valley View Elementary, a former Parents’ Club president, and a Valley View mom for over 10 years. Elizabeth and her family are dealing with immediate expenses surrounding funeral costs for Davin, their beloved son, brother, and friend who left this earth too soon. The Sibitz-Smith family will also face future costs relating to medical expenses from critical care, recovery, and possible rehabilitation. And because both parents are unable to work at this time, covering even routine bills will be difficult.
We — Theresa Hardy, Barb Osterman, and Sara Webb-Schmitz — are friends of the Sibitz-Smith family and are organizing this GoFundMe account on their behalf. Theresa and Sara will provide updates from the family via this page and share more information on how else to support the family as it becomes available. Barb will ensure that all raised funds immediately reach the family. Please give generously and share widely to help support our friends at this time!
