Support for the Salkic Family

The Salkic family came to the US just like most other Bosnians, to seek asylum from war and a place to call home. Semso and Mina Salkic endured unimaginable pain during war in Bosnia and witnessed what no parent should ever have to witness, losing an infant child to a grenade. They managed to escape the war in hopes for a better future for their remaining 4 kids.

I have known the Salkic family for over 22 years now. They were one of the first families we became great friends with when they first arrived to the United States. They quickly became our extended family when my sister-in-law married my brother. Over the last 5 years, once again, they have witnessed unimaginable stress and suffering with Semso’s (my sister-in-law’s father) health. From having major heart surgery to almost losing the battle with cancer to the most recent battle with COVID-19 leading to his passing, may he rest in peace.

It brings me great sadness when I think about the pain and suffering my extended family has been through just in the last few years. Semso will forever be remembered as a wonderful and kind father, husband, and the most incredible grandfather to my beautiful 3 nieces. It breaks my heart that with his passing, he will not live to see his 4th grandchild. He was supposed to become a grandfather for the 4th time this coming December. He would have spoiled this new bundle of joy just as much as he had with the 3 previous ones. I know this because he was the happiest when his grand babies were around.

Even through his toughest moments and all the sadness he had witnessed, I have never seen him angry. He loved to laugh and tell jokes. He always had the kindest smile and the cheesiest Bosnian dad jokes. He was one of the kindest and most generous men I have known. He took care of his family with pride and helped his community whenever he could. He and his wife have lived a quiet life like many of our immigrant parents working a minimum wage job with poor insurance.

The spread of this horrid virus has impacted us all in so many ways, especially the families who have lost their loved ones. As we all know with poor insurance in this country the bills can pile up quickly. Not to mention the burial arrangements can be incredibly expensive. I would like to help alleviate some of the financial stress and burden to help my wonderful extended family during this difficult time. We can only imagine how challenging it must be to grieve your loved one and at the same time endure financial difficulties. I would like to help and hope that you can too.

On behalf of the Salkic family and mine (Omeragic/Zvizdic), I would like to thank you in advance for your generous heart and support during this difficult time.
