On Thursday 1/26/17, Ryan encountered heart failure while driving. As far as we are concerned, what has happened since that moment has been a series of miracles.
It was a miracle that the bystander who witnessed the accident dialed 911 immediately after he reached the car and found Ryan not breathing and without a heartbeat. It was a miracle that a Union City police officer was close by, reached Ryan quickly and started administering CPR right away. It was also a miracle that Ryan’s accident happened less than a mile from the closest fire station and that they were able to respond quickly. It's a miracle that on the way to the hospital in the ambulance, Ryan’s heart started beating again after 6 shocks to the chest. That first night we were told he would not make it through the night because his heart was only working at 50% but he made it. The doctors and nurses were in disbelief. Another miracle. Ryan is still here fighting but the struggle is not over.
Our family is very hopeful of his full recovery, but Ryan, May and the girls have a long road ahead of them as he faces long-term hospitalization due to global brain damage that happens when there is a lack of oxygen to the brain. Currently, Ryan’s vitals are stable. He also had a pacemaker installed to monitor any further irregular heart function. Ryan will soon be transferred to a skilled nursing facility where he will undergo intensive daily therapy to learn the everyday skills we all take for granted. As you can imagine, this kind of care comes at a cost and health insurance only covers a small portion. And when Ryan gets well enough to make it home, there will be home care, medical equipment, and transportation costs which will only partially be covered by insurance, if at all. Ryan won’t be contributing a second income so this will all be up to May for now.
May has not left his side. Fortunately, May’s job has been very understanding of the situation, but she will need to return to work full-time soon. In addition to working and making sure Ryan has the best care possible, she will also be caring for their two young daughters, Reyna & Miley and will most likely need to hire childcare help.
In these uncertain times, it’s your love and support that can help Ryan, May and the girls get through this all. Please do what you can. We are eternally grateful for all of you.
Thank you from the Inciong and Pepito families.
