Beloved husband and father, John Blodgett passed away suddenly and unexpectedly late January 2021.
John had become very sick in the beginning of 2018 and we found out his liver and kidneys were failing. We were tremendously lucky that by late 2018 he was able to get organ transplants. Over the next two years he got stronger and started to look healthier than he had in years, but unfortunately the medication he was on to allow his body to accept the new organs also lowered his immune system.
In early January, he thought he just had a sinus infection but then he got a fever for a few days, so my mom rushed him to the hospital just in case. Over the course of less than 24 hours he went from just having a fever to complete organ failure with acute myeloid leukemia. Unfortunately there was nothing they could do. Because of COVID I had not been able to see my father in person for almost a year.
He was incredibly proud and honored to be an organ transplant recipient. He was a donor as well, so hopefully he is paying it forward to someone else who needs a second chance. He was always cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. He was a patient and loving husband and a proud father that was always ready to boast about his daughter's filmmaking achievements. He loved movies, Star Wars, fishing, cooking, and was a proud veteran of the US Navy.
My mom and I feel extremely blessed that we got these extra two years with him. However now we find ourselves in a challenging spot while we deal with the plethora of things that need to be taken care of after his passing. It's because of this we are asking for help.
I personally have taken time off work so I can be with my mom and help her, but we're quickly discovering dealing with all this plus grieving is a two person full time job. Since I'm a freelancer, time off work = no pay and since my mom is over 65 she is also not working due to COVID. She was surviving on both her and my father's unemployment and Social Security, but now she will have to continue without his. There's also other bills like rent, food, funeral costs, death certificate costs, medical bills, and other things that we could use help with at this time.
So many wonderful people have already asked how they could help and have offered financial or food support, so I crunched some numbers and came up with this rough amount that would greatly help both of us through this time. It would help us pay bills for two months, pay funeral and medical costs, and provide us with food and rent money.
We know this is a terrible time for so many people, so we totally understand if you are unable to donate much or donate at all. Another way you can help is sending us support through text messages, emails, cards, or phone calls. Please don't be a stranger, it really helps to hear from friends and hear memories about John.
Also please consider donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so they can continue the search to cure cancer and help prevent other's from loosing their loved ones. Donate here: https://www.lls.org/
Thank you so much for your support , no matter how big or small. We appreciate your help in this trying time.
